Implemented in 1989, the Marseille-Provence Technology Park in Château-Gombert is one of the key operations led by the Marseille Provence Metropole Urban Community.
Its fundamental mission is to associate research, higher education and companies in developmental dynamics that furthers, amongst others, technology transfer and spinoffs.

The original character of the Château-Gombert Technology Park also lies in the integration of this economic and scientific area into an urban scheme with the onsite creation of a new city quarter including dwelling places, schools and services.
In less than fifteen years, the Technology Park asserted itself as a major component of the Marseille metropolitan area's economic development strategy. |

Economic development through innovation
The Marseille Provence Métropole urban community has made its support to scientific and technological innovation a priority in its economic development strategy, which is focusing on knowledge economics. Among others, it is translated into the following actions:
- support to creation and assistance to innovative companies through the Marseille Innovation company nurseries and the Grand Luminy Association,
- development of those privileged sites such as the Marseille Provence Technology Park in Château-Gombert and the Marseille Luminy Science and Technology Park where research, higher education and companies have been gathered together,
- support to the competitiveness centres' development
- expansion of development real estate projects on these sites, which is supported by MPM to accommodate high-tech companies:
 The Technoptic building, dedicated to optics-photonics in the Château-Gombert Technology Park.
Luminy Biotech, dedicated to life sciences and biotechnologies in the Marseille Luminy Science and Technology Park.
Indeed, the Marseille Provence Métropole urban community supports the six government-certified competitiveness centres that belong to its area:
- PHOTONICS: complex systems in optics and imaging.
- ORPHEME: emerging pathologies and orphan diseases.
- MER Paca.
- SCS: secured communication solutions.
- CAPENERGIES: non GHG emission energies.
- RISK MANAGEMENT AND COUNTRY VULNERABILITY.
- PEGASE: Aeronautics.
